Learning interoperability standards support in Open edX
Developing high quality learning materials is hard. It becomes even harder if it is not possible to reuse and extend already existing ones. In this workshop we'll discuss a few major learning interoperability standards such as SCORM and LTI and take a look at their support levels in Open edX.

Open edX from scratch
With how complex the Open edX configuration repository has become, it is easy to lose track of what is going on during a playbook run to install Open edX. In this workshop we outline how to set up Open edX from scratch, without using the Ansible playbooks, to get a better understanding of the requirements and mechanics of an Open edX installation. This knowledge helps designing custom Open edX hosting solutions.

If you want to participate in the hands-on exercises, you will need to download and install some software well before the workshop.  Please do this before the conference, since you probably won't be able to download this via the local wifi at the conference venue.

Studio Frontend - Develop on the edX Platform Using Modern Frontend Technology
Have you wanted to develop using modern front end tooling within the Open edX platform? Studio-frontend offers (for the most-part) a Python-free experience for developers to build pages outside of the edx-platform using modern FED technologies, including React, Redux, and ES6. The pages can then be installed as an NPM package. In this workshop, we'll show you how to do this in Studio. Bring your computer and follow along!

Building Custom Analytics Tools using D4M
The Open edX platform provides very rich data that can be used for tracking student progress, improving content, and answering research questions. Many of these goals can be accomplished using the Open edX Insights tool, but occasionally more custom tools are required. This tutorial will show how to build custom analytics tools using the open source D4M library.

We are aiming to make this tutorial hands-on! The code, notebooks, and data used in this tutorial is available through github. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop and follow along! All dependencies and setup instructions are detailed on the github page and we ask that those following along download and install the dependencies ahead of time.

Click here for the code and material for this tutorial.

We'll be taking a deep-dive on how to install, configure and support small single-server implementations for budget-constrained institutions. We'll focus on how to successfully deploy and support the Open edX platform in cases where there are only one or fewer dedicated IT resources assigned to the project and the operating budget for the platform is in the hundreds of dollars per month.

Embedded Video Questions
Do you want to make questions or links pop up during your learner's videos? Of course - we all do! I'll show you how. This workshop dives into the javascript functions that control the edX video player and how to access them. Examples (including pop-up questions) will be shown. This session is ideal for those who do not control their own version of edX - all methods shown work within the existing core platform without adding XBlocks or changing any of the platform code.
