Open edX from scratch
With how complex the Open edX configuration repository has become, it is easy to lose track of what is going on during a playbook run to install Open edX. In this workshop we outline how to set up Open edX from scratch, without using the Ansible playbooks, to get a better understanding of the requirements and mechanics of an Open edX installation. This knowledge helps designing custom Open edX hosting solutions.

If you want to participate in the hands-on exercises, you will need to download and install some software well before the workshop.  Please do this before the conference, since you probably won't be able to download this via the local wifi at the conference venue.

Building blocks for adaptivity: a modular architecture for adaptive learning implementation and research
We demonstrate a modular architecture for adaptive learning, with the goal of lowering the barriers for using and doing research on adaptive learning. As part of ALOSI (Adaptive Learning Open Source Initiative), we developed the Bridge for Adaptivity and the ALOSI adaptive engine, two open source applications supporting a common framework for experimentation that integrates several modular components. We will demonstrate the use of this system with the Microsoft MOOC on edX, "Essential Statistics for Data Analysis Using Excel", how we used various advanced features of Open EdX (LTI provider, course blocks API, import/export, content experiments) and discuss our vision for how this architecture can support compatibility with multiple learning management systems.

CANCELLED: The Secret Life of Data in Education
In the last decades, the power of data and analytics has transformed instruction in education. Increasingly, large-scale data is available on student learning and interaction online. Much of this data represents student behavior, allowing researchers to model and track many elements of student learning that were not previously feasible at scale: engagement, affect, collaborative skill, and robust learning. In turn, these models can be used in prediction of long-term student outcomes, and to analyze the factors driving long-term success of students.

All of my research is using aggregated data from the Open edX Platform.

Keynote: Georgia Tech's Online MOOC-based Master Program
In May 2013, Georgia Tech together with its partners, Udacity and AT&T, announced a new online master’s degree in computer science delivered through the platform popularized by massively open online courses (MOOCs). This new online MS CS— or OMSCS for short — costs less than $7,000 total, compared to a price tag of $40,000 for an MS CS at comparable public universities and upwards of $70,000 at private universities.

The first-of-its-kind program was launched in January 2014 and has sparked a worldwide conversation about higher education in the 21st century. President Barack Obama has praised OMS CS by name twice, and over 1,000 news stories mentioned the program. It’s been described as a potential "game changer" and "the first real step in the transformation of higher education in the US.” Harvard University researchers concluded that OMSCS is “the first rigorous evidence showing an online degree program can increase educational attainment” and predicted that OMSCS will single handedly raise the number of annual MS CS graduates in the United States by at least 7 percent.

To ensure program quality and rigor, Georgia Tech started in 2014 with small enrollment of 380; in January 2017 enrollment exceeded 6,360; about 7500 are expected to enroll in the Fall.  So far 895 students have graduated from OMSCS; over 300 will graduated in May. The program has also paved the way for a number of similar, MOOC-based MS programs.

The talk will describe the OMSCS program, how it came about, its first four years, and what Georgia Tech has learned from the OMSCS experience. We will also discuss its potential effect on higher education.

Future Directions of Open edX Architecture
The current Open edX platform has evolved organically over the last 6 years, now collectively offering about 15 thousand courses to nearly 30 million learners worldwide. This is a commendable feat built upon the edX mission and the enduring support of the Open edX community. Looking toward the coming years and our ambitious goals, our path forward is met with challenges of time-to-value and an impeding intricate monolithic architecture. Therefore, edX is investing in a strategic initiative to rebalance our platform development with Intentional Architectural direction in addition to Emergent Design by autonomous teams. In this talk, we will share our vision of a platform architecture where SOLID design principles reign and our current thoughts on how to get there.

What can be learned from Natural Language Processing of MOOCs?
Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and a newly developed webcrawer, we analyzed 75 of edX's most popular MOOCs. The crawling tool extracted course's textual data from readings (html), video transcripts and assessments available in the Open edX learning management system (LMS). Secondly, through statistical analysis we discovered interesting patterns from the course materials. Finally, we perform text readability assessment based on word embeddings and compare the courses using clustering.

Keeping Maintenance Under Control - Contribute All The Changes!
Making changes to Open edX carries a price: every time you want to upgrade to a new version of Open edX, the changes have to be adapted to the new version. After doing this for a while, the changes accumulate, and every new stable release requires weeks of work, sometimes months. To avoid this, we suggest an approach that will benefit both you and the project: make sure that your changes are designed in a way that is useful to the larger community, and contribute them all to Open edX. If the community is also using your changes, then new developments will take them into account and you won't have to maintain them by yourself. In this way, new stable versions of Open edX will already include them.

Collaborative-based Personalization On Campus and Online
This talk will be an overview of the roles adaptivity and personalization have played in computer tutoring systems and examples of how these concepts have been applied for both within course supports in edX and course selection at UC Berkeley.

The instructor's own domain model of subject matter informs the organization of a course's syllabus; however, significant differences can exist between the ideal domain model and the ideal pedagogical model for a given audience. In this talk, we'll show how data from previous offerings of a course can be used as a type of syllabus refinement, creating an adaptive course sequencing by way of personalized suggestions to each learner based on her path [1]. I will also cover how big data approaches are being adopted at UC Berkeley to surface personalized information to students about courses and progressing towards goal-based course sequence recommendation [2].

The objective of this study is to evaluate the extent to which media richness of videos in MOOCs is likely to influence the emotional and cognitive engagement of students. Building a scalable, blockchain-enabled multi-site skills network on Open edX
In this session we will share our journey in building an Open edX powered skills network that spans over a million users and dozens of websites. With several hundred thousand users actively taking courses, we were faced with several challenges and came to an inflection point a couple of years ago. We needed a platform that could scale to millions of users. Because of our focus on practical learning, we needed to integrate and embed our hands-on lab environments within courses. Our clients and partners wanted our content but with ability to customize and whitelabel the platform and define access controls. And there were also requirements for enterprise and SSO integrations, issuing IBM Open Badges, etc. We will also talk about our plans to evolve the skills network with Blockchain based digital credentials and contributing back to Open edX.

Git Off My Lawn! or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fork
This is a deep dive into how Stanford's engineers have managed and maintained a forked codebase: what worked, what hasn't, and what we've learned over the years. While Open edX continues to add new integration points for extending the codebase, there are still a number of things we can only accomplish via a fork. We will attempt to answer such questions as "Why did we fork?", "What did we fork?", "What should or shouldn't be forked?", and "How can you make the process easier on yourself?"
